Mont Saint-Michel in France is one of the most stunning places to visit in Europe. This island of the coast of Normandy and Brittany has been a pilgrimage destination for centuries. The abbey on the top of the rocky island dates back to the 10th century. Legend has it that Archangel Michael appeared to the bishop of Avranches in a dream. The Archangel ordered the bishop to build a sanctuary in his name at the top of the island.
In recent years efforts have been made to restore the maritime character of Mont-Saint-Michel. A bridge has replaced the former causeway, enabling the sea to once more fully surround the mount at particularly high tides. The visitor car parks have been moved further inland. Shuttle buses will take you from the car park to the Mont-Saint-Michel island. These free buses operate every day at regular intervals.
