Argostoli Turtles: Where and When to See Sea Turtles in Kefalonia

Seeing the turtles in Argostoli is one of the most memorable wildlife experiences you can have in Kefalonia. Loggerhead sea turtles, or Caretta caretta, can often be spotted in the waters around Argostoli Harbour and Koutavos Lagoon, particularly when fishing boats return to the harbour.

If you’re an animal lover, a photographer, or simply someone who wants to connect with nature, watching these magnificent creatures up close is a true highlight of any holiday in Kefalonia.

Why Are There so Many Sea Turtles in Argostoli?

Argostoli is a particularly good place to see loggerhead sea turtles because of its sheltered harbour and the nearby Koutavos Lagoon. The calm waters provide feeding and resting areas for turtles, while the harbour gives visitors an unusual opportunity to see them close to the centre of town.

This combination is what makes turtle watching in Argostoli so special. You are not travelling to a remote nature reserve, you can be walking along the waterfront and suddenly see a loggerhead turtle appear in the water beside you.

Where to See Turtles in Argostoli?

One of the best things about seeing the turtles in Argostoli is how easy it is. The turtles can be seen right around the harbour and Koutavos Lagoon, in the heart of Argostoli.

1. Argostoli Harbour, the easiest place to look

The harbour is probably the best place to start if you want to see the turtles in Argostoli.

This is also where we saw them. We simply walked along the waterfront, stopped for a while and watched the water. You don't need any special equipment or a boat trip, just a little patience.

At first, you may not see anything at all. Then suddenly, a turtle appears at the surface to take a breath before disappearing underwater again. That was one of the things we enjoyed most about watching them: you never quite know where the next one will appear.

The area around the fishing boats and fish market is particularly worth checking, as turtles are regularly observed there.

2. Koutavos Lagoon

If you do not see a turtle around the harbour, continue towards Koutavos Lagoon.

The lagoon lies immediately beside Argostoli and offers a much quieter setting than the working harbour. It is also an important feeding area for loggerhead turtles.

The calm surroundings make it a pleasant place to continue looking for turtles while walking around the lagoon.

3. De Bosset Bridge

The De Bosset Bridge is another good spot to keep an eye out for turtles.

The historic stone bridge crosses Koutavos Lagoon and gives you a different perspective over the water. It is also an easy addition to a walk between the harbour and the lagoon.

Best Time to Spot Turtles in Argostoli?

Early morning is generally the best time to look for turtles around Argostoli Harbour. This is when the waterfront is becoming active and fishing boats are returning to the harbour, which can make turtle sightings more likely.

There is no exact time when turtles are guaranteed to appear, though. They are wild animals, so patience is part of the experience.

Turtles can also be seen outside the main summer months, so don't assume you have to visit in July or August to have a chance of seeing one.

Responsible Turtle Watching

As exciting as it is to see turtles up close, it’s important to remember that they are a protected species. When watching sea turtles in Kefalonia, keep these tips in mind:
  • Observe from a distance: Never touch or chase the turtles.
  • Avoid feeding them: They rely on natural food sources, and hand-feeding can be harmful.
  • Respect the environment: Keep the harbor and lagoon clean by not leaving litter behind.
By following these guidelines, you’ll help protect these gentle giants for future generations.
