There are waterfalls you admire for a few minutes, and then there are waterfalls that make you stop and simply listen. That was our experience at Triberg Waterfalls in Germany’s Black Forest.
We visited in autumn, and the timing could hardly have been better. The forest around us was glowing with golden, orange and deep red leaves, while heavy rain the day before had made the waterfalls much more powerful. Water rushed down through the forest, mist hung in the air, and the sound of the cascades echoed between the trees.
If you are exploring the Black Forest, Triberg is one of those places that is easy to add to your itinerary but much more impressive when you actually see it.
Our Visit to Triberg Waterfalls in Autumn
Autumn gave Triberg a completely different atmosphere. The entire Black Forest seemed to have turned into a living painting, with the colourful trees surrounding the waterfalls on every side.
What made our visit even more spectacular was the weather. It had rained heavily the day before, so there was plenty of water rushing down the mountain. The waterfalls were loud and dramatic, with fine mist rising from the cascades as we walked through the forest.
There was something wonderfully peaceful about it too. Despite the power of the water, the combination of the crisp mountain air, the smell of pine trees and the autumn colours made this one of those places where we simply wanted to enjoy the surroundings.
What Makes Triberg Waterfalls Special?
Triberg Waterfalls are among the best-known waterfalls in Germany, with the Gutach River dropping through a series of cascades for around 163 metres through the Black Forest.
But the height is only part of what makes the place special. The waterfalls are surrounded by dense forest, and the paths take you close to the rushing water at different points along the way.
That means the experience changes as you walk. From some viewpoints you can see the water cutting through the trees, while from others you are much closer to the cascades and can really feel the power of the falling water.

Walking Around the Waterfalls
The best way to experience Triberg Waterfalls is on foot. The paths lead through the forest alongside the cascades, with several places where you can stop for a closer look or take photographs.
Some sections are more comfortable than others, so good walking shoes are a sensible choice, particularly after rain. The paths can become wet and slippery when the weather has been bad.
We actually think the wet weather helped make our visit more memorable. The water was flowing strongly, the forest felt fresh and the mist around the falls added to the atmosphere.

The Best Views of Triberg Waterfalls
One of the nicest things about visiting Triberg is that you don't see the waterfall from just one viewpoint. As you follow the paths through the forest, the scenery keeps changing.
There are viewing platforms where you can stop and look directly towards the falling water, while other sections give you a wider view of the forest and the cascades together.
For photography, autumn is particularly beautiful. The colourful leaves create a natural frame around the white water, especially when the falls are flowing strongly after rainfall.

Explore Triberg After the Waterfalls
The waterfalls are the main reason most visitors come to Triberg, but it is worth spending a little time in the town as well.
Triberg is one of the places in the Black Forest where you will quickly notice the region's traditional character. Shops sell cuckoo clocks, local souvenirs and Black Forest specialities, while cafés and restaurants make it easy to stop for something to eat after walking around the waterfalls.
If you have never visited this part of Germany before, Triberg also makes a good introduction to the classic Black Forest atmosphere: wooded mountains, traditional houses, local food and plenty of cuckoo clocks.

Tips for Visiting Triberg Waterfalls
- Wear good shoes: Some paths can be wet and slippery, especially after rain.
- Allow enough time: Don't rush through the waterfalls. The different viewpoints are part of the experience.
- Check the weather: Rain can make the paths less comfortable, but it can also make the waterfalls much more impressive.
- Autumn is beautiful: The combination of colourful forest and flowing water makes this a particularly photogenic time to visit.
- Check current information before visiting: Opening arrangements and admission prices can change, so check the official information before setting out.

Was Triberg Waterfalls Worth Visiting?
For us, definitely. What made Triberg stand out wasn't simply the height of the waterfall. It was the combination of the rushing water, the dense Black Forest and the incredible autumn colours surrounding us.
The rain the day before our visit probably helped too. The waterfalls were powerful and dramatic, while the mist and wet forest gave the whole place a wonderfully atmospheric feeling.
If you're travelling through the Black Forest, Triberg Waterfalls are a place I'd make time for rather than treating as a quick photo stop. Give yourself time to walk through the forest, enjoy the different views and take in the atmosphere.
