The 19 windmills in Kinderdijk are one of the best known sights in the Netherlands. They were constructed around 1740 to drain the excess water from the Alblasserwaard polders. From the late 19th century this job has been taken over by electric pumps. In 1997 the windmills of Kinderdijk were placed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
If the wind is strong enough you can see the mills in action on Saturdays in Juli and August. The visitor mill is open from the beginning of May until the end of October.

Location: Molenkade Nederwaard, Kinderdijk, the Netherlands.
