Looking for a peaceful alpine escape near Neuschwanstein Castle? Pinswang, a lovely alpine village in northern Tyrol, Austria, lies right on the border with Bavaria in Germany and is an excellent starting point for exploring the region.
We spent a wonderful week in Pinswang and found it to be the perfect place to unwind while being close to some of the region’s most beautiful natural and cultural landmarks. One of the highlights is the crystal-clear River Lech, which flows gently through the area, perfect for peaceful walks, picnics, or simply soaking in the Alpine atmosphere.
Ideal Location for Iconic Day Trips
Pinswang’s location is unbeatable for visiting the world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle. A short 15-minute drive will bring you to Schwangau, or if you prefer a more scenic route, you can hike or cycle from Pinswang to the castles via a well-marked trail through the countryside.
Family-Friendly Adventures Nearby
If you're traveling with children, make sure to visit the Walderlebniszentrum Ziegelwies in nearby Füssen. It features two interactive forest trails (Auwaldpfad and Bergwaldpfad) and a spectacular treetop walkway that crosses the Austria-Germany border, offering panoramic views of the Lech valley.
Another must-see in the area is the Lechfall, a picturesque waterfall near Füssen, as well as the town’s historic old center, full of colorful buildings, shops, and cafes.
More Alpine Highlights Just a Short Drive Away
From Pinswang, it’s only a 15-minute drive to Highline 179, one of the longest pedestrian suspension bridges in the world, and the Burgenwelt Ehrenberg castle ruins. If you're up for a longer adventure, the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak, is just under an hour away and offers year-round snow and breathtaking 360-degree views of the Alps.
