Nestled in the peaceful countryside of Westerlo, Belgium, Tongerlo Abbey is a serene and spiritual retreat with centuries of rich history. Founded in 1128 by Giselbert of Kasterlee, the abbey was established in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary and has remained a place of reflection, devotion, and cultural significance for nearly nine centuries.

Stroll Through History, Free of Charge
Tongerlo Abbey offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore a working Premonstratensian abbey, completely free of charge. You’re welcome to wander the tranquil grounds, admire the historic architecture, and gain insight into the monastic way of life. A small on-site museum tells the story of the abbey’s spiritual and historical journey through the ages.

A Unique Leonardo da Vinci Connection
What sets Tongerlo Abbey apart from other monastic sites is its remarkable connection to Leonardo da Vinci. In 1545, the abbey acquired a 16th-century oil-on-canvas copy of da Vinci’s iconic Last Supper. This copy is considered one of the most faithful reproductions of the original fresco in Milan’s Santa Maria delle Grazie, capturing many details that have faded over time in the original work due to its fragility.
You can view this hidden masterpiece in the Leonardo da Vinci Museum at the abbey. The entrance is free, making it an accessible cultural experience for art lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
