Le Havre

Le Havre is a city in the Haute-Normandie region in France. It is located in the north-west of France on the English Channel. The city was destroyed during World War II but rebuilt in modernist style by Auguste Perret after the war. Because the city was reconstructed in an unique way, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.

Notre-Dame Cathedral in Le Havre

The Notre-Dame Cathedral is one of the oldest buildings in the centre of Le Havre after the devastation in the Second World War. This Roman Catholic cathedral dates back to the 16th century and became the seat of the Bishop of Le Havre in 1974. The Notre-Dame is classed as an official historical monument since February 10th 1919.

Le Volcan

This House of Culture in Le Havre was constructed in 1982 by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. The building shaped like a volcano shelters a theatre and a cinema showing independent films. The complex is composed in two large auditoriums, Le Grand Volcan with 1200 seats and Le Petit Volcan with 200 to 500 seats.

The Malraux Museum in Le Havre

The Malraux Museum has a wide collection of paintings from the 16th to the 20th century. After the Orsay Museum in Paris it holds the most important collection of impressionist masterpieces in France. The Malraux features work of Boudin, Renoir, Pissarro, Monet and many more.

The beach of Le Havre is located only 500 metres from the city centre. It stretches out for 2 kilometres along the North Sea. Next to the beach is a 4 kilometres long promenade that brings you from the pebbled beach to the marina.

When walking towards the Citadel from the Montagne de Bueren you'll see this Monument au 14ème régiment de ligne(first photo). If you walk a bit more further you'll reach a nice spot from where you have a wonderful view of Liège.

Saint Paul's Cathedral in Liège

The Saint Paul's church was founded in the 1oth century, it was promoted to cathedral in the 19th century to replace the demolished Saint-Lambert Cathedral. The interior is decorated with beautiful frescoes on the ceiling, colourful stained glass and a marble sculpture of 'Christ in his grave' made by Delcour in 1696.
The treasury room of the cathedral contains many silver and gold items with a reliquary bust of Saint Lambert and the reliquary of Charles the Bold as highlights. The admission fee for the treasury room is 5 € for adults, 3 € for seniors and students.

Prince Bishops' Palace

The Prince Bishops' Palace was built in 1526 after the original palace was destroyed by a fire. It was constructed with elements of Gothic and Italian Renaissance. The palace was the home of the Prince Bishop of Liège, nowdays it houses parts of the provincial government and the Courts of Justice. The Prince Bishops' Palace is located on the Saint Lambert's Square, where the Saint Lambert Cathedral used to stand before the French Revolution.

The Aquarium Museum

The Aquarium Museum in Liège is divided into two parts: the Zoological Museum and the Aquarium. In the museum halls are over 20.000 preserved specimens from across the globe, ranging from the smallest insects to a 19 meter long whale.

The Aquarium rooms have 46 tanks with about 250 animal species. Here you can have a closer look at piranhas, sharks and the Australian Stonefish amongst other fish.

Montagne de Bueren in Liège

The Montagne de Bueren is a 374 steps long staircase in Liège. The stairs were built in 1881 to allow soldiers on top of the hill to go down to the centre without having to walk through the dangerous alleys. When you reach the top you'll be rewarded with a great view of the city and the Meuse river.
