The Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh is the Queen's official residence in Scotland. It was founded in 1128 as a monastery. It stands at the end of the Royal Mile and is open for visitors.

Except it is not open when the Queen is in residence--or about to be, which was the case when we made a trip to visit it.
