Standing proudly on the Koekelberg Hill, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart (also known as the Koekelberg Basilica) is one of the most impressive landmarks in Brussels. Construction began in 1905 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Belgian independence, but due to two world wars and other delays, it wasn’t fully completed until 1970.
Art Deco Architecture on a Monumental Scale
Unlike most European basilicas, this one stands out for its Art Deco style, a bold, geometric design language that was incredibly innovative for its time. With a height of 89 meters and a length of 164 meters, it’s said to be the 6th largest church in the world and the largest Art Deco church ever built.

Visitors can access the dome, which offers breathtaking panoramic views over Brussels and beyond. On a clear day, you might even spot the Atomium or the green fields surrounding the capital. The viewing platform is accessible by elevator and a few flights of stairs, well worth the effort!
