De Gooyer Windmill is one of just six remaining windmills in Amsterdam. Located at Funenkade 5, near the historic city center, this iconic Dutch windmill offers a perfect blend of tradition and modern-day Amsterdam charm.
Originally built in the 16th century, the mill was moved to its current location in 1814 to avoid wind obstruction caused by nearby barracks. The city of Amsterdam restored it in 1929–1930, ensuring its legacy would endure.

Restored, Resilient & Still in Use
Though a storm severely damaged the structure in 1972, De Gooyer was lovingly restored and returned to working condition in 1976. While it's no longer used daily for milling, it remains operational and is occasionally put into use.
Windmill + Brewery = Amsterdam Experience
What makes De Gooyer especially popular today is the Brouwerij ’t IJ, a local craft beer brewery located at the base of the windmill. Visitors can enjoy a refreshing beer in a unique setting, making it a favorite stop for locals and tourists alike.
The combination of authentic Dutch engineering and artisan beer makes this spot a must-visit.
