Located in the heart of Porto Antico, the Biosphere is one of Genoa’s most fascinating modern attractions. Designed by world-renowned architect Renzo Piano, this glass-and-steel structure is a small but dense rainforest nestled in the city’s redeveloped harbor area.
A Miniature Tropical Ecosystem
Often referred to as the “Glass Globe”, the Biosphere houses a carefully maintained microclimate that supports a wide variety of tropical plants and exotic animals. Inside, you'll discover:
- Lush ferns, orchids, and other rare plant species
- Colorful butterflies fluttering through the air
- Curious reptiles and small birds that call the dome home
Every corner of the structure is designed to mimic a real rainforest ecosystem, offering visitors a chance to experience tropical nature up close, without ever leaving Genoa.
Designed by Renzo Piano
The Biosphere was created by Renzo Piano in 2001 as part of the redevelopment of Genoa’s Old Port (Porto Antico). Its futuristic design contrasts beautifully with the historic port buildings, making it a favorite subject for photographers and architecture enthusiasts.
