If you’re visiting Bavaria, don’t miss the most iconic viewpoint of Neuschwanstein Castle: the Marienbrücke, or Queen Mary’s Bridge. Perched high above the Pöllat Gorge, this footbridge offers breathtaking panoramic views of King Ludwig II’s fairytale masterpiece, a must-see for photographers, nature lovers, and castle enthusiasts.
How to Get to Marienbrücke
The Marienbrücke is just a short hike from Neuschwanstein Castle, around 10–15 minutes uphill. Simply follow the well-marked signs through the forest path. If you prefer not to walk, a shuttle bus runs from Parking Lot P4 in Schwangau and drops you off near the bridge, perfect for families, older travelers, or those tight on time.
A Bridge with Royal Heritage
Originally constructed in 1845 by order of King Maximilian II of Bavaria, the bridge spans the deep Pöllat Gorge. In 1866, King Ludwig II reinforced it with an iron structure to create the perfect vantage point for admiring his beloved new castle. The bridge is named after Queen Marie of Prussia, Ludwig’s mother, who was fond of the mountain scenery.
Tips for Your Visit to the Marienbrücke
The Marienbrücke is extremely popular, especially in summer and during midday hours. For the best experience, try to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the crowds are smaller and the lighting is perfect for photos. Don’t stop in the middle, walk to the far end of the bridge, where fewer people gather and the views are just as stunning (if not better).
