It is the largest and most important church in the Czech Republic and the seat of the Archbishop of Prague. St. Vitus took several centuries to complete, work began in 1344 and was not completed until the 20th century.
The cathedral contains the tombs of saints and Bohemian kings, including the graves of St. John of Nepomuk and St. Wenceslas. During the centuries the coronations of Czech kings and queens took place here, the Czech crown jewels are still kept in the coronation chamber of the cathedral.
