Located in the center of Maastricht, the Dinghuis is a striking late-Gothic building with a rich history. Built in the 15th century, it originally served as the city’s main courthouse, and its name comes from the Dutch word "geding", meaning trial or judgment.
From Courtroom to Watchtower
In its early days, the Dinghuis wasn't just a courthouse, it also held a critical civic function. Its tower was one of the highest points in Maastricht for many years. A watchman was stationed at the top to keep an eye out for fires, sounding the alarm if danger threatened the city.
The architecture of the Dinghuis reflects its dual role as a place of justice and civic defense, with its mix of Gothic and Renaissance features giving it a commanding presence.
