The Church of the Holy Spirit (Heiliggeistkirche) is one of the most iconic landmarks in Heidelberg, Germany. Built between 1398 and 1441, this stunning Gothic church stands proudly in the Marktplatz, the central market square, and dominates the Heidelberg Old Town skyline.

A Unique Religious History
What makes the Church of the Holy Spirit particularly fascinating is its shared religious history. For centuries, both Catholics and Protestants used the church. In 1706, a barrier was constructed inside the church to separate the two congregations, a rare solution that lasted 230 years until its removal in 1936. Today, the church serves as a Protestant place of worship.

Royal Tombs and the Bibliotheca Palatina
The church is also the final resting place of 55 Prince Electors, significant rulers of the Palatinate region. Additionally, the church once housed the Bibliotheca Palatina, one of the most important Renaissance libraries, until it was taken to the Vatican in 1623.
