Visit Cancale, The Oyster Capital Of Brittany
Tuesday, July 06, 2021
Cancale is located in the French region Brittany, between Saint-Malo and Mont Saint-Michel. The fishing village is well known for its excellent oysters and is also called the oyster capital of Brittany.
The shellfish here are grown by individual farmers in a park, whose beds can be seen at low tide. Thanks to the high quality plankton that grows in the Mont Saint-Michel Bay, Cancale oysters are among the most popular in France. The village produces 5000 tonnes of farmed oysters in its parks and 1000 tonnes are being fished in the bay. Cancale oysters have even been recognized by UNESCO, which added it to the Intangible Cultural Heritage list because of its expertise in breeding molluscs.
