A Glimpse into the Most Beautiful Castle of the Netherlands

In the late 18th century, De Haar Castle had fallen into a state of serious disrepair. The noble families who owned it struggled to maintain the large estate, and it was eventually abandoned. For much of the 19th century, the castle lay in ruins.

In 1892, Baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nijevelt, having inherited the estate through his family line, decided, along with his wife, Baroness Hélène de Rothschild, to restore the castle. They commissioned Pierre Cuypers, the renowned Dutch architect, to lead the renovation. Cuypers was tasked with transforming the ruins into a luxurious residence while preserving the historical essence of the original medieval structure.

The extensive renovation spanned two decades, during which Cuypers essentially rebuilt De Haar Castle from its foundations. Guided by historical references, he seamlessly integrated modern conveniences like central heating, electric lighting, and running water, harmonizing medieval architecture with contemporary luxury.

One of the highlights of the De Haar Castle is the Great Hall. This is the heart of the castle, with its soaring ceilings, intricate woodwork, and majestic chandeliers. Adorned with rich tapestries and portraits, it's a grand space that reflects the castle's noble heritage.

The dining Room was designed for lavish banquets, it boasts an impressive collection of silverware and china. The expansive dining table and large windows offer stunning views of the meticulously landscaped gardens.

Each bedroom is exquisitely decorated with luxurious fabrics, antique furniture, and personal items that belonged to the family. Every room has a unique theme, reflecting the tastes and interests of its former occupants.

Baron Etienne and Baroness Hélène's dedication breathed new life into De Haar Castle, transforming it into a majestic estate that bridged its medieval origins with the opulence of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, the castle stands as a testament to their foresight and Cuypers' craftsmanship, inviting visitors to step back in time and experience its rich history.
