A Rich History Reborn from Ruins
The history of De Haar Castle spans nearly a thousand years, though by the late 18th century, it had fallen into ruin. For much of the 19th century, the estate stood abandoned—until Baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nijevelt and his wife, Baroness Hélène de Rothschild, decided to restore the family legacy in 1892.
They commissioned Pierre Cuypers, the famed architect behind the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam Central Station, to rebuild the castle from the ground up. Over two decades, Cuypers transformed the medieval ruins into a lavish neo-Gothic residence, seamlessly blending historical architecture with modern comforts like central heating, electricity, and running water.
