The Spectacular Castle of Pierrefonds

Pierrefonds Castle dates back to the 15th century, but was taken down and left in ruins in the 17th century. Under the direction of Napoleon III, the castle was completely restored by the architect Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century. His interpretation of the style of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance period resulted in this imposing castle.

Château Pierrefonds houses a permanent exhibition on the restoration by Viollet-le-Duc and an exhibition of the Monduit art collection, a lead casting firm. In the cellars of the castle, almost hundred statues, mostly praying, are preserved. In a strange and mysterious atmosphere created by sound and light are these plaster giants commissioned by Louis-Philippe for the Museum of the Palace of Versailles. Among the figures are characters who have marked the history of Pierrefonds.
