The Handeckfall Bridge is one of those unexpected sights you can discover while exploring the spectacular Grimsel Pass in Switzerland. Located near the Gelmerbahn in Guttannen, this suspension bridge crosses the dramatic landscape beside the Handeckfall waterfall and the Aare Gorge.
We actually came across the Handeckfall Bridge while walking from the Gelmerbahn towards Hotel Restaurant Handeck for a meal. We weren't specifically looking for a suspension bridge, which made finding it even more memorable.
With the waterfall, rocky gorge and surrounding Bernese Alps all around you, the short crossing gives you a surprisingly spectacular view of this part of Switzerland.

Walking Across the Handeckfall Suspension Bridge
The bridge itself isn't particularly long, so you don't need to plan a major hike just to experience it. What makes it interesting is the setting. You are surrounded by steep Alpine scenery, with the sound of rushing water below and the Handeckfall nearby.
As you walk across, the bridge has the slight movement you would expect from a suspension bridge. It isn't a terrifying experience, but it adds just enough excitement to make an otherwise short walk more memorable.
For me, the best part was simply stopping for a moment and taking in the scenery. The combination of the bridge, waterfall, gorge and mountains makes this feel much more dramatic than you might expect from such a short crossing.

Handeckfall Waterfall
The bridge would already be worth seeing for the scenery, but the nearby Handeckfall makes the location even more impressive.
The waterfall drops through the rocky landscape towards the Aare Gorge, surrounded by the steep mountains of the Bernese Oberland. Depending on the water flow, the waterfall can be particularly impressive, and you can hear the rushing water as you approach the area.
This is also one of those places where photographs don't always capture the atmosphere properly. Standing beside the gorge, hearing the water and looking up at the mountains gives you a much better sense of the scale.
If you are visiting the area on a sunny day, the contrast between the white water, dark rocks and green Alpine landscape can be especially beautiful.

Where Is Handeckfall Bridge?
The Handeckfall Bridge is in Handegg, near the village of Guttannen in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland.
It is located in the Grimsel region, along the spectacular route over the Grimsel Pass. The area is known for its mountain scenery, waterfalls, reservoirs and hiking trails.
The bridge is also close to the Gelmerbahn, the famous funicular that climbs towards Gelmer Lake. This makes it particularly easy to combine the bridge with a visit to the Gelmerbahn rather than making a separate trip just to see the bridge.
If you are driving the Grimsel Pass, this part of the route is well worth taking your time over. There are plenty of places where the landscape is so impressive that you will want to stop anyway.
Is Handeckfall Bridge Worth Visiting?
Yes, especially if you are already visiting the Gelmerbahn or travelling over the Grimsel Pass.
I wouldn't drive across Switzerland for the bridge alone. It isn't that kind of attraction. But that's not really the point.
The Handeckfall Bridge is a small experience in a spectacular setting. When you combine the suspension bridge with the waterfall, gorge, mountains and nearby Gelmerbahn, it becomes a very worthwhile stop.
For us, it was actually better that we hadn't planned the bridge as a separate attraction. We simply discovered it while walking to the restaurant after visiting the Gelmerbahn.
Those unexpected moments are often the ones you remember most from a trip.
What to See Near Handeckfall Bridge
The biggest attraction nearby is the Gelmerbahn, one of Switzerland's steepest funicular railways. The railway climbs from Handegg towards Gelmer Lake, surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery.
The wider Grimsel region is also packed with things to see, including mountain lakes, reservoirs, waterfalls and hiking routes.
You can easily spend a full day exploring this part of the Bernese Oberland rather than simply driving through it.
The Aare Gorge is another spectacular attraction in the wider area. The river has carved a dramatic gorge through the limestone, creating narrow passages, towering rock walls and walkways through the landscape.
And, of course, the Grimsel Pass itself is an attraction. The mountain road is one of the most scenic drives in this part of Switzerland, with hairpin bends, high Alpine peaks and enormous mountain landscapes.
A Small Bridge With a Big View
The Handeckfall Bridge isn't one of Switzerland's biggest or most famous attractions, and that's part of its charm.
Standing on the suspension bridge with the Handeckfall rushing through the gorge and the mountains surrounding you is a very Swiss experience.
So if you're visiting the Gelmerbahn or driving the Grimsel Pass, don't rush past Handegg. Take a little time to cross the Handeckfall Bridge and look around.
Sometimes the smaller stops end up being the ones you remember long after the famous attractions.
