A Unique Site at the Rugged Coast of Brittany

Just 5 km from Saint-Malo in Brittany, the Sculptured Rocks of Rothéneuf (Rochers Sculptés) are a fascinating and unusual attraction carved directly into the rugged coastline. This open-air gallery of more than 300 granite figures is the life’s work of Abbé Adolphe-Julien Fouré, a priest who, after a stroke left him deaf and mute, dedicated the final 15 years of his life to shaping this breathtaking site. The Story Behind the Rocks A Priest Turned Artist: Abbé Adolphe-Julien Fouré (1839–1910) created the sculptures after being forced into isolation due to illness. A Legendary Inspiration: His carvings draw from religious myths, pagan legends, folklore, and local tales, making each figure mysterious and symbolic.
