The Schilthorn: a Unique and Thrilling Experience in the Swiss Alps

Located 2970 metres (9744 ft) high, the Schilthorn is one of the most popular destinations to explore in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland. The views from the platform at the top are an incredible experience. From here you can have a spectacular view of the Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau and more than 200 other summits. The Piz Gloria, the world's first revolving mountain restaurant, offers you a 360° view of the alps while enjoying a meal.

The Schilthorn is also famous for being featured in the James Bond movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" from 1969. At the top of the mountain you can visit the "Bond World" exhibition and follow in the footsteps of James Bond. In the "Bond Cinema" you can see the key scenes on the big screen. Outside on the mountain is "The Walk of Fame", It shows photos of actors and crew, as well as their hand prints and personal messages.

The top of the Schilthorn can be reached in 4 stages. You can take a cable car from Stechelberg or travel from Lauterbrunnen to Mürren via Grütschalp. We took the cable car from Stechelberg and enjoyed the spectacular views while going up to Gimmelwald. Find more info here on how to travel to the top of the Schilthorn.

From Gimmelwald we took the next cable car to Mürren, one of the most charming villages in Switzerland. This car-free village is the perfect stopover to walk around and discover the beauty of Switzerland. From Mürren it's also possible to take the funicular to Allmendhubel. A great place to visit with children and let them have fun at the playground or discover the flower trail. Allmendhubel also has a restaurant with a fantastic panoramic view. The funicular to Allmendhubel is a 5-minute walk from the cable car.

The next cable car that you need to board brings you from Mürren at 1907m (6257 ft) to Birg at 2677m (8783 ft). Birg is famous for it's Skyline Walk and Thrill Walk. The Skyline Walk is a glass extension of the existing terrace that partly hangs above a deep abyss. The Thrill Walk is a spectacular 200m long cliff pathway made of glass and steel. Along the path you can walk on a rope or crawl through a wire tunnel. Everything is very safe and it's a fun experience for the whole family. The Skyline Walk and Thrill Walk also offers fantastic views of the Swiss Alps.

Trübsee: a Hidden Gem on the Titlis Mountain

The Trübsee is a turquoise colored mountain lake halfway up the Titlis mountain in Engelberg, Switzerland. It lies 1795 m (5899 feet) high and can be reached by the Titlis Xpress cable car. The valley station of the cable car is located at Gerschnistrasse 12 in Engelberg. The gondola passes the mid-station Trübsee on its way to Stand. At this mid-station you can also find Berghotel Trübsee and Restaurant Alpstübli.

The Trübsee has a lot of activities to offer for children and adults. During the summer months you can fly 500 metres down the Flyer Zipline. Use the trampoline or jump tower at the Titlis Adventure Park. Hire a rowing boat or kayak and explore the lake. Go mountain biking on the different trails around the Trübsee or rent a scooter bike which require no pedaling.

You can also find many hiking trails around the Trübsee and an adventure playground close to the lake. At the playground are also various barbecue spots and benches to have a picnic and enjoy the beautiful views of the Swiss Alps.

During the winter you can try the minibobs, balancer and snowtubes at the snow park next to Trübsee Alpine Lodge. If you are looking for more excitement then you should try the snowmobiles at the Titlis SnowXpark. This park has different circuits to choose from, the longest is around 1 km.

Aletsch Glacier in Switzerland

Located in the Bernese Oberland region in Switzerland, the Aletsch Glacier is the longest glacier in Europe. The glacier stretches over 23 km from its formation in the Jungfrau region down to the Massa Gorge. It covers an area of 117,6 km² and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.

We admired this beautiful river of ice from the viewing platform on the Jungfraujoch. On this spot the view of the surrounding area and the glacier is truly spectacular. Like all glaciers in the world, the Aletsch Glacier is also suffering the effects of global warming. Since 2000, the end of the glacier has shrunk by 1000m (0.62 miles) and lost around 300m (0.19 miles) of its thickness.
